Position Title:  Water/Sewer/Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator/Mechanic/ Maintenance Worker II

General Statement of Duties

Performs technical, operational, and maintenance duties in the operation and maintenance of the Town’s Wastewater Treatment Facility, Water Distribution System, and Sewer Collection System.

Minimum Requirements:  High school diploma or GED.  Valid NC Driver’s License Class C with a good driving record.  North Carolina C Distribution Certification, Collection System Operator Certification Grade 1, Biological Water Pollution Control Operator Certification Level 1, or the ability to obtain these within one year.  Any combination of education and experience equivalent to graduation from a community college with a degree in chemistry or biology and considerable experience in the operation and maintenance of a wastewater treatment plant, water distribution, and sewer collection systems.  Familiar with the operation and maintenance of backhoe, dump truck, sewer jetter, tractor, rotary cutter, commercial leaf vacuum/blower, chainsaw, pole saw, and string trimmer.  Ability to lift, pull, and push up to 50 lbs. frequently, and occasionally 100 lbs.  Ability to work in indoor and outdoor environments, which include extreme hot and cold conditions. Ability to work in extreme wet, muddy, and sometimes dusty environments.  Ability to work some weekends and nights, and to be on call for emergencies.  Ability to meet all safety program requirements. 

Position Primary Duties:  Under general supervision, performs water and sewer line installation, repair, and maintenance. Installs water and sewer taps, connects/reconnects service. Removes and installs water meters, meter boxes, and setters. Maintains water and sewer main right of ways. Performs inspections of sewer system as required by law. Performs weekly inspections and maintenance of sewer system lift stations. Monitors levels of water system elevated tanks. Locates water and sewer lines when requested by other utilities. Inspects and performs maintenance of public works equipment.  Inspects and maintains water system fire hydrants. Reads water meters and accurately records the readings for billing purposes. Performs customer service functions that include high water consumption, leaks at the meter, and sewer service issues. Performs the primary interface with customers while effectively bringing the problem to the correct solution.  Performs maintenance and operational procedures for the wastewater treatment plant.  Assists in keeping all maintenance and operating records.  Will perform other work as directed by Public Works Director.

Position Secondary Duties:  Under general supervision, assists with street maintenance when needed that may include tree pruning or removal, picking up debris from street curbside, mowing and trimming grass in Town maintained areas, sidewalk maintenance, loose leaves removal from curbside, and curb and gutter maintenance.  Assists with household garbage pickup when needed.
